Leading Across Generations

In today’s workplace, it’s common to find four generations working side by side—Boomers, Gen X, Millennials, and Gen Z. Each brings unique experiences, values, and expectations. For leaders, that can be a challenge. But for non-traditional leaders—those of us who may not fit the typical corporate mold—it’s also a unique opportunity.

As someone who identifies as an introvert, a neurodivergent thinker, or simply someone who leads differently, you may have already felt out of place in traditional leadership circles. But your perspective is needed now more than ever.

In my latest video, I explore how to lead cross-generational teams with authenticity and confidence. Here are a few key takeaways:

  • Value Generational StrengthsOlder team members bring deep experience and insight. Younger colleagues often bring energy, new thinking, and tech-savviness. The goal isn’t to compare—it’s to combine these strengths.

  • Adapt Your Communication StyleSome prefer face-to-face conversations, others lean toward Slack or email. The more you flex your style, the more your team will feel seen and heard.

  • Avoid StereotypesPhrases like “Millennials are entitled” or “Boomers hate change” are not only unhelpful—they’re harmful. Lead with curiosity, not assumptions.

  • Balance Work-Life ExpectationsGenerational differences often show up in how people view flexibility and hours. Create space for open dialogue and mutual respect.

  • Encourage MentorshipWhen younger and older employees learn from each other, you build a culture of growth and connection.

  • Embrace Change and ExperienceInnovation and caution can coexist. You don’t have to choose between them—great leadership bridges both.

Ultimately, leading across generations requires empathy, adaptability, and a willingness to see each team member as an individual. As a non-traditional leader, those qualities may already be your superpower.
