In April 2022, I took on a new professional role that came with new responsibilities and a larger mandate. This new role is the sixth position I have held in 11 years with my current employer. You might think that by now, I would be a master of change. However, I admit that I am not immune to the Dunning-Kruger effect, even as a seasoned role shifter.

Understanding the Dunning-Kruger Effect

For those who may not know, the Dunning-Kruger effect occurs when a person lacks knowledge or skills in a certain area, causing them to overestimate their own competence. Here’s a graph that illustrates this effect beautifully.

Dunning-Kruger Effect

When I changed roles in April 2022, I approached it like I had with previous changes. I began my ascent up the steep learning curve with a smile on my face. My confidence grew rapidly. Before I knew it, I reached the peak of “Mount Stupid,” where I felt competent in managing my new responsibilities. I enjoyed my brief stay at the top, taking in the view. But as I gazed into the horizon, I quickly realized I knew far less than I had anticipated. Like every other time I took on a new role, I soon started my descent into the Valley of Despair.

The Valley of Despair

The Valley of Despair is an intriguing place. For me, it feels like being stuck in quicksand—a constant struggle to move forward. Everything feels difficult and slow. Each step requires immense effort, and progress seems minimal. To visualize this, I often compare it to the Swamp of Sadness from The NeverEnding Story, where Atreyu desperately tries to save his horse, Artax, from the mud.

The Never Ending Story

Like Artax, one could easily give up and remain in the Valley of Despair. However, having been there many times before, I’ve learned that this phase is essential for growth. It’s crucial to trust the process, which often includes a rapid downfall before things improve.

Climbing the Slope of Enlightenment

Over the past few weeks, I’ve slowly made my way out of the Valley of Despair and onto the slope of enlightenment. It’s been a fun and enlightening journey. I’ve learned a lot about myself and my new role. While I still have a long way to go, I’m gradually ascending the path as I expand my competencies and acquire new knowledge. Honestly, I’m not here just for the end goal; I’m here for the journey. That’s where the real fun lies! 😉

Why This Matters

Now, why am I sharing this? I believe we don’t talk enough about the journey we all embark on when taking on new professional roles. We strive to prove ourselves and succeed, often forgetting that we all traverse the Valley of Despair at some point. If you’re currently struggling like Artax and Atreyu did in the Swamp of Sadness, don’t lose hope. It’s just a phase, and it’s all part of the process. Embrace the journey, because that’s where the real growth happens!

Embracing Change

Change is never easy, but it’s an essential part of our professional lives. Each new role brings its own set of challenges and opportunities. Embracing these changes can lead to personal and professional growth.

The Importance of Support

Having a support system is vital during these transitions. Whether it’s friends, family, or colleagues, sharing your experiences can lighten the load. Talking about your struggles can provide new perspectives and insights.

Learning from Experience

Every challenge we face is a chance to learn. Reflecting on past experiences can help us navigate current obstacles. What worked before? What didn’t? Learning from our experiences is key to moving forward.

Finding Joy in the Journey

As I mentioned earlier, the journey is where the real fun is. Celebrate small victories along the way. Each step forward is a testament to your resilience and determination.

Conclusion

In conclusion, navigating new professional roles can be daunting. The Dunning-Kruger effect is a natural part of this journey. Remember, the Valley of Despair is just a phase, and you are not alone. Embrace the challenges, seek support, and find joy in the journey. Together, we can foster inclusive workplaces where everyone can thrive and lead authentically.

So, let’s keep climbing, learning, and growing together!
